There was a very large turnout on 22 September for the public panel event led by CEU philosophy professors, "Philosophy, the refugee crisis, and how to help in Hungary" -- indicating the keen interest across CEU in helping refugees and migrants, as well as in philosophical analysis of political debates about migration policy.

The number of people displaced by conflict worldwide has reached an all-time high, and in Europe we are witnessing the largest movement of refugees since World War II. This event aims to connect philosophy, politics and practical activity. A natural starting point is to think about what justice demands, but members of the panel will also explore how philosophical reflection on propaganda and dehumanization may help us understand and respond to current events. There will be analysis of the present situation in Hungary, and information about what CEU is doing and how individuals can help.

Understanding is a concept largely absent from contemporary epistemology in which propositional knowledge reigns supreme. I argue that we should move understanding to center stage. I identify three different paths to understanding. I begin with some recent analytic discussions of the value of knowledge and our epistemic goals to show how understanding has crept up there. I then move to recent debates concerning know-how. Surprisingly, one finds an appeal to understanding in certain versions on both sides of the know-how debate, i.e. in both intellectualists and anti-intellectualists.
