CALL FOR APPLICATIONS

Research Assistant (10 h/week, Sep16–Mar17) for Project “In/human: Dehumanization in Science and Society”, Deadline for Application: Aug 23, 2016.

The Department of Philosophy at Central European University in Budapest invites applications from PhD students and postdoctoral researchers for a research assistant position as part of the project “In/human: Dehumanization in Science and Society”, directed by Prof. Maria Kronfeldner.

The project:
Dehumanization – that some people have been and still are regarded, depicted and treated as less human – has been a pervasive phenomenon in science and society. Systematic research on dehumanization exists mainly in social psychology, and the phenomenon has also been studied by various Humanities disciplines, e.g. History, Holocaust Studies, Gender Studies and Racism Studies. Yet there is almost no systematic analysis of the phenomenon from a philosophical point of view. The project In/human aims to change this by studying dehumanization with a focus on philosophical issues, but on the basis of a decisively multi-disciplinary approach. It wishes to bring a diversity of perspectives – historical, scientific, philosophical and artistic – into a constructive dialogue. The overall goal is to systematically analyze dehumanization in science and society.

Tasks of the research assistant:
(i) doing a comprehensive interdisciplinary literature report on dehumanization;
(ii) creating a database of the respective literature;
(iii) finding options for a homepage of the project (finding out whom to hire later as a web developer) and planning a launch;
(iv) assisting in drafting a grant application;
(v) assisting in managing the editorial processes for publications connected to the project, including copy-editing written materials;
(vi) additional tasks related to research connected with dehumanization.

Qualifications:
Applicants should have experiences in the use of professional databases. A degree in philosophy is recommended, but applicants without a philosophy degree will also be considered.

Equal opportunity:
CEU is an equal opportunity employer. Gender inequity in philosophy will be taken into consideration during the selection process.

Compensation:
The applicant will be hired for 6 months on the basis of an assignment contract for 10h per week on an hourly rate.

How to apply:
Applicants need to submit: CV, list of publications, a writing sample that exemplifies their capacities for covering large bodies of literature in a systematic manner, cover letter that includes a statement of interest in the topic. If you are already employed by CEU or if you are enrolled in a program at CEU, please highlight this in your CV. Please send applications (in one PDF-file) to Zsofia Jeney-Domingues <Jeney-DominguesZs@ceu.edu> by Aug 23.

Questions:
If you have questions related to the contract, please contact Zsofia Jeney-Domingues <Jeney-DominguesZs@ceu.edu>, before Aug 05 or after Aug 20; if you have questions related to the research topic or the tasks, please contact Maria Kronfeldner <KronfeldnerM@ceu.edu>, before Aug 01 or after Aug 20.
