Freedom and Agency – Two Workshops

November 28, 2011

The Human Project held two workshops at the Department of Philosophy on November 15 and 16, focusing on the works of two philosophers who work in the related fields of freedom and agency.

The workshop titled Reading Owens was dedicated to the philosophical works of Professor David Owens (http://sites.google.com/site/davidowensphilosophy/), faculty member of the Philosophy Department at University of Reading, currently visiting professor at NYU. Presentations aimed to cover all the major topics in Prof. Owens’s works, from causation to epistemic normativity, from self-knowledge to promising. The presenters were Dániel Kodaj, Zsuzsanna Balogh, Anna Réz, Anton Markoc and David Owens himself.

Next day’s workshop was dedicated to Freedom of the Will: A Conditional Analysis (Routledge 2010), a recently launched monograph by Prof. Ferenc Huoranszki, faculty member of the Department of Philosophy. During the workshop presenters discussed and critically analyzed the main theses of the book chapter by chapter. The presenters included Ferenc Huoranszki (CEU), Gábor Bács (KE), Anna Réz (CEU), Zsófia Zvolenszky (ELTE), Howard Robinson (CEU), Eric Brown (CEU), Judit Szalai (ELTE), András Szigeti (CEU) and Stefaan Cuypers (KU Leuven).
