Batalla en el cielo (Battle in Heaven), Mexico, 2005
Directed by Carlos Reygadas
Spanish with English subtitles, 98 min.

By turns explicit and elusive, Battle In Heaven is one of the most challenging and controversial films to come out of Mexico. But while it’s the graphic sex in Carlos Reygadas’ urban drama that has grabbed headlines, this ultimately emerges as more than just a flesh-fest. Vividly shot on the streets of Mexico City, it offers a unique examination of guilt that revolves around the tubby, taciturn but curiously moving figure of chauffeur and part-time child kidnapper Marcos. Working without a screenplay, Reygadas is a Warholian impresario, creating existential situations where nonprofessionals can expose themselves—sometimes cruelly—on camera. This concern for authenticity is reinforced by the interpolation of documentary footage—most spectacularly in using a vast religious procession as a backdrop. (www.villagevoice.com)
